When we got word that A-list Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie was starring in Robert Stromberg‘s Maleficent, our mind wasn’t on who would play the lovely but naive Princess Aurora. Thanks to Twitch, we now know that the coveted role could possibly go to up-and-comer Elle Fanning.
This idea is a rather enticing one, and one that I stand behind. If you’re going to pick anyone to play the Disney Princess, Fanning is definitely a perfect fit. Although Jolie‘s star power is enough to carry the film in terms of box office success, Fanning has surely gathered her own power after starring in various roles with big directors over the past few years including Cameron Crowe, Sofia Coppola, David Fincher and J.J. Abrams. Although the role is not set in stone as of now, other than scheduling conflicts with other projects, I can’t foresee Fanning stepping down from this highly anticipated remake.
This marks Stromberg‘s directorial debut, which has been penned by Linda Woolverton — they both worked on Alice in Wonderland, where Stromberg went on to win the best art-direction Oscar. The project has been described as a “revisionist take on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale.” And with the recent Snow White remakes, I’m only assuming we’ll be getting word of another Sleeping Beauty remake.
