A few days ago, Zack Snyder apparently made it clear that Viggo Mortensen would not be taking on the villainous role in his upcoming Superman film, The Man of Steel. Not that big a shock, particularly due to the fact that he was only kind of rumored to begin with. As we all know, casting for a superhero movie is pretty much as unreliable as you can get.

So, the routine should be obvious: take this next story with a grain of salt. LatinoReview has heard that Edgar Ramirez, possibly best known at this point for the excellent crime epic Carlos, is in talks to play Superman’s latest enemy. The guy is already in business with Warner Bros., as he’s playing villain Ares in the Clash of the Titans sequel, Wrath of the Titans, which just started filming this week.

Ramirez’s performance in Carlos was pretty extraordinary; not only did he keep your attention for five-and-a-half hours, but he managed to elevate what was already pretty strong material. I even think it’s kind of a travesty he didn’t get an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, even though the Academy classified it as a mini-series.

The character he’d be playing – like everything else surrounding this movie – is currently a mystery. We keep hearing that it’ll be Zod, but that’s still only a rumor. The Man of Steel begins shooting later this summer, so one should expect the identity of both the villain and the actor portraying him relatively soon. Right now, though, we kind of have no idea.

What do you think of Ramirez playing the villain in The Man of Steel? Would he make a good fit for the movie?
