Another week, another stack of DVDs to work our way through.

Grab ‘Em Right Away:

Nothing.  I don’t know if I’m getting cynical again but nothing appeals to me this week.

Check It Out:

A Town Called Panic

Directed by: Stephane Aubier & Vincent Patar

Written by: Stephane Aubier & Vincent Patar

Starring: Stephane Aubier, Vincent Patar & Bruce Ellison

Why should you rent this? Because even though it definitely isn’t my favorite movie it is a one-of-a-kind animation that is whimsical enough to work for those of you out there with a five-year-old still inside of you. It’s about this town and how the Cowboy and Indian (who are best of friends) try to build their friend, Horse, a barbecue. However, in a mystical coffee accident they end up ordering 50 million bricks instead of 50. This is just the beginning of how this small town completely changes itself and how Cowboy, Indian and Horse go on this ridiculous adventure. It’s worth taking a look at if you find any of the above appealing to you.  Check out my full review here.

The Runaways

Directed by: Floria Sigismondi

Written by: Floria Sigismondi & Cherie Currie

Starring: Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning & Michael Shannon

Why should you rent this? Because it’s a story about a rock legend that’s definitely worth knowing about. I always believe that good music transcends genre. No matter how much you think you don’t like a certain genre of music once you hear some great songs from it you can’t help but agree. That’s what I feel about this movie. I’m not a massive hard rock fan, but the music from Joan Jett and The Runaways is definitely music worth knowing. While Kristen Stewart is rehashing her character of angsty teen again on screen for us to cringe she is saved by the acting talents of Michael Shannon and Dakota Fanning. The movie is a nice biopic that will keep you engaged and have you wondering how it all goes sour in the end (assuming you don’t know this story already). Check out my full review here.

The Losers

Directed by: Sylvain White

Written by: Peter Berg & James Vanderbilt

Starring: Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans, Idris Elba, Columbus Short & Jason Patric

Why should you rent this? Because as mediocre as this movie is it still works sporadically as a fun action comedy movie.  Jason Patric is one of this most fun bad guys on screen since Dick Dasterdly was invented. All Max (Jason Patric) needed to make his character complete was a thin mustache for him to twirl as he made evil things just happen. So while The Losers (which I nominate for the lamest named military team ever) are busy trying to clear their names we meet this hot action chick who I don’t care about. However, the team does have two good things going for it.  It contains Pooch (Columbus Short) and Jensen (Chris Evans) who are two of the most hilarious characters this year.  While Jeffrey Dean Morgan is busy being as annoying and uncharismatic as possible on screen I just couldn’t wait for my next “y’all been chopper jacked fools!” moment. Avoid Like the Plague:

Cop Out

Directed by: Kevin Smith

Written by: Robb Cullen & Mark Cullen

Starring: Tracy Morgan, Bruce Willis & Seann William Scott

Why should you just give up and go to jail without passing go? Because it is one of the lamest buddy cop films in existence. The buddy cop genre was very popular in the 80s (Lethal Weapon, Beverly Hills Cop, etc.), but today it’s become more of a niche genre. It’s hard to get what people loved about it on screen again. While I think that Kevin Smith definitely took a nice swing at it, he definitely failed. Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan just failed on almost every level whenever they were on screen together and this is the biggest reason why this movie is bad. The one shining light is the character of Dave, played by Seann William Scott, who is hysterical every moment he opens his mouth. While you do get a handful of chuckles throughout the movie it just isn’t worth the runtime. Check out my full review here.
