Time to talk about DVD again.  Here’s what I think you should buy and what to avoid this week.

Grab ‘Em Right Away:

Party Down (Season 1)

Created by: John Enbom, Rob Thomas, Dan Etheridge & Paul Rudd

Starring: Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Ryan Hansen, Martin Starr, Lizzy Caplin & Jane Lynch

Why should you buy this? If you’re a fan of the awkwardness of British humor and love some  honestly funny stories then this is for you.  What happens when you have a catering service that works for the richest and brightest people in Hollywood, filled with aspiring and failed actors and screenwriters?  You get damn good television.  This show aspires for greatness in its comedy and reaches it everytime.  For fans of Rob Thomas‘ other television show Veronica Mars there are a ton of cameos from the cast from episode to episode (on top of the two regular cast members from the show already in the Party Down crew).  If you can’t find this funny then there is something wrong with you and I recommend you see a doctor quick.

Give it a Chance:

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

Directed by: Werner Herzog

Written by: William M. Finkelstein & Victor Argo

Starring: Nicholas Cage, Eva Mendes, Xzibit & Val Kilmer

Why should you rent this? Even though it didn’t become an instant classic for me I can see the hilarity in it and I think it’s one of those movies (like A Serious Man) that everyone should check out just so they can have their own opinion on it.  Nicholas Cage plays the most coked out police officer that you’ll ever find on film.  He even acts as pimp for his girlfriend that’s a prostitute.  He jacks up college partygoers for sex and drugs.  This movie is so over-the-top that I think that Cage and Kilmer had trouble coming back to reality.

Avoid it Like the Plague:

Lord of the Rings Trilogy: The Theatrical Cut (BluRay)

Directed by: Peter Jackson

Written by: J. R. R. Tolkien & Fran Walsh

Starring: Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom, John Rhys-Davies, Sean Astin, Andy Serkis & Ian McKellen.

Why should you not take that long walk to Mordor? Please do not misunderstand me. This movie is fantastic and I can promise you that I’ll be the first one in line to check this out in the higher definition, but I know I’m not the only one completely disappointed in the studios for continuing to milk this property. As I’m sure many of you agree, have come to the conclusion (after having already bought the DVD version) that the extended cut is far superior to the theatrical cut.  I’m sure they are holding on to that goldmine for the theatrical release of The Hobbit.  I say skip this not because the movie is bad, but to wait for the better version to hit Blu-ray.
