Because he doesn’t appear to. Brooks’ upcoming romantic comedy, starring Paul Rudd and Reese Witherspoon, has once again undergone a title change. This time from How Do You Know? to Everything You’ve Got – but don’t expect it to last long.

Brooks, who’s a creator and writer for The Simpsons,  has told Vulture that, “there might actually be a third title coming soon… Titles make me nuts. I have a terrible time with titles.”

The latest title has been plucked from a line by Witherspoon’s character, when she confesses to Rudd that “I mean, if you can’t give everything you’ve got to whatever you’re doing right now, then you’ll never be able to give everything to anything.”

Brooks, who is already in post-production for the film, also described the premise:

“Two people meet on the worst nights of their lives,” Brooks adds of the story. “And they’re being tested by adversity. I think the thing about life is, most of us reach that point where life can’t be the same when this thing happens. It’s just then when you have to give everything you’ve got and pray that it’s enough.”

The plot sounds rather like a typical middle-of-the-road romantic comedy, but with a solid cast and a good writer/director these thing s work, as Brooks himself has proven in the past (Terms of Endearment, As Good As It Gets). His title indecision might just be reflective of his attention to detail. In any case, he had better stick with a title and run with it soon otherwise the film’s promotion might get a bit confusing.

The film also stars Owen Wilson and Jack Nicholson and is currently set for release on December 17th.

What do you think of the new title?
