Ever thought it might be cool to see the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man from Ghostbusters stomp through New York in 3D? Or how about the massive alien ships from District 9? Maybe you’ve always wanted to feel what it was like to be Spider-Man swinging from the rooftops? Well your wish just might be coming true, popular films in the Sony catalogue are looking to get a 3D makeover.

“We’ll probably be able to start next fiscal year, if we can convert them into 3D with good effects,” Joe Nakata, a deputy general manager for Sony’s 3D strategy unit, said yesterday in Tokyo. “Companies specialising in conversion processes are starting up in India and the infrastructure is getting prepared.” Source Bloomberg

With 3D TV’s being the latest craze at this year’s CES, it makes sense for the big studios to start thinking about how they can take advantage of the technology. Sony projects sales from 3D related hardware could reach revenue of up to 15.5 billion dollars by the year 2013 and are in talks with Discovery Communications, IMAX and other video game software developers to create 3D content. With this boom of 3D technology coming out the gate, will other studios soon follow suit? It’s sure to be inevitable as already Sony’s hardware competitors such as Samsung, LG and Panasonic are starting to think about content for their 3D ready TVs.

Do you think 3D is getting out of hand? Or are you enjoying the 3D revival and plan to get a 3D TV?
