Come Away will be the live-action directorial debut for the Oscar-winning Brave director Brenda Chapman. Her film, which is slated to begin photography later this year, now has some rather big names attached to it. Both Angelina Jolie and David Oyelowo will star in the director’s latest fantasy drama, Deadline reports.
From screenwriter Marissa Kate Goodhill, the story plays as a prequel to both Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland. The film is expected to explore Peter and Alice’s past relationship as siblings during their adventurous search for their parents (Jolie and Oyelowo). When speaking to Deadline, director Brenda Chapman said “Angelina and David are going to bring a beautiful chemistry and depth to this magical story, giving audiences a wonderful step outside the expected.”
With directing credits on Brave and The Prince of Egypt and writing credits on The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, Chapman is no stranger to the realm of the fantastical, especially when working with Disney properties. Come Away screenwriter Marissa Kate Goodhill reflected on Chapman’s experience when speaking to Deadline: “Brenda is a singular storyteller. Her decades of experience in creating rich fantasy worlds populated by complex characters make her a dream director for this project, which explores how fantasy functions as a way to cope with reality. Her thoughtful approach to filmmaking and indomitable talent make her the perfect person to bring this story to life.”
Being that the film is still in pre-production, more information is yet to be released; only time will tell who joins Jolie and Oyelowo, and how the film ultimately shapes up.
