First Mark Wahlberg and now David O. Russell; MTV is reporting that the director of The Fighter is also eager to jump aboard a potential sequel but instead of merely directing, he’d want to take screenwriting duties. Much like Wahlberg when he brought up the idea for a Fighter sequel, O. Russell is also leaning towards basing it around the three fights “Irish” Micky Ward had with Arturo Gotti in 2002-2003.

Look, I can completely understand that O. Russell and Wahlberg put everything they had into The Fighter, so they feel connected to it. No one works on something that long without forming an intense attachment, but this whole movement from the duo to make a sequel seems unnecessary. There’s no other way to say it. Audiences got what they wanted from the first movie and I doubt anyone was clamoring for the story to be continued, no matter how great the performances were.

All this hoopla around making The Fighter 2 will most likely die down as Wahlberg and O. Russell slowly come off the high they got from their pet project getting showered with awards. Plus, O. Russell still has to make an Uncharted adaptation that doesn’t cause a mutiny within the video game community, so he’s got a lot on his plate to distract him. As for Wahlberg, give him a ball of yarn or something until he forgets about it. Please.

I can’t be the only one who thinks this is a bad idea, right?
