Just when you thought the auteur had sold out with X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2, Darren Aronofsky pulls another project out of his endless treasure cove. Variety is reporting he will direct the thriller Machine Man, based on Max Barry’s serialized online story. Black Swan co-writer/producer Mark Heyman will be adapting the script. You can preview Barry’s writing here and check out a quick synopsis below.

In the pop thriller, a gadget geek and engineer working at a forward-thinking tech firm decides to systematically replace his weaker fleshy parts with high-end titanium performance upgrades of his own design. But he isn’t the only one with plans for his superior parts.

The story sounds like a natural evolution in Aronofsky’s themes, as Black Swan deals with transformation and I’m sure Wolverine 2 will also. It also feels like an odd cousin to Shinya Tsukamoto‘s insane Tetsuo: the Iron Man. With Wolvie 2 shooting in March and Heyman still needing to adapt the script, it may take to late 2011 for this to go in production.

Black Swan hits theaters December 3rd and you can check out my TIFF review here.
