As an auteur Darren Aronofsky has brought us into the world of wrestler, ballerinas and even the past, present and future. He’s now set to tackle Noah next and after that big-budget film wraps up he might give our first president his own character drama. Variety reports he is set to produced and direct a drama titled The General, which focuses in on George Washington.

Paramount Pictures is looking to acquired the film, written by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, who have worked on Tower Heist, Accepted and New York Minute. Going from the Olsen twins to Brett Ratner to Darren Aronofsky is an odd path, but the material must be worthy if he has his eye on it. Details are sparse, except that the film follows in the vein of Clint Eastwood‘s Unforgiven, instead of a “straight historical drama.”

Update: Aronofsky himself updates on the project, not tying it to Unforgiven rather that it’s a “a raw portrait of the man becoming an American.” Few directors due “raw” better, so looking forward to this as it’s now seeming more in his wheelhouse.

One would expect Noah, led by Russell Crowe, to consume most of Aronofsky’s time between now and its March 2014 release, so I wouldn’t expect more news on what his next film will officially be for quite awhile. As Washington certainly isn’t a figure that gets his due on the big screen, I’d love to see what Aronofsky comes up with.

What do you think about the director possibly taking on this film after Noah?
