With his hit HBO show Eastbound & Down premiering the supposed series finale (then again, even Jody Hill isn’t sure) this weekend, Danny McBride will at least hang up his Kenny Powers gear for the time being. With some more spare time, he’s signed on to star in another comedy feature.
Deadline reports the comedy actor has been set by Warner Bros. to star in their remake of the Danish property Klovn (or, Clown). Mikkel Nørgaard’s original film follows Frank and Casper, two long-time friends that are preparing for a wild canoe getaway from their female companions to go on a “Tour de Pussy.” However, when Frank is stuck with his brother-in-law’s 11-year-old son Bo, he takes the opportunity to prove he has father potential to impress his pregnant girlfriend and reassure her of his abilities.
We saw the film, which also has a TV series as well, during Fantastic Fest (review here) and called it a hilarious, surprisingly sweet and heavy on awkward comedy. McBride will also write the film, which will be produced by his Rough House company that includes David Gordon Green. The Hangover director Todd Phillips is also jumping on to produce with his Green Hat Films. company.
The only details on what McBride will change, as he has already begun writing, will be the age of the kid, bumping him up to 13. I still get a kick out of McBride’s comedy, even if he is a bit overexposed so I look forward to this one. Drafthouse Films have rights to the original film and will release on July 27th. McBride will next be seen in Seth Rogen‘s directorial debut Apocalypse, appearing as himself.
Have you seen the original film? Is McBride a good fit?
