Recall the spectacular reviews garnered by the 2005 documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston about the mentally ill, sometimes institutionalized, and brilliant musician/artist Daniel Johnston. Writer and director David Miller and son Jordan Miller are working on a narrative biopic about the life and work of Johnston [Pedestrian via The Playlist].

Although it is still in the scripting phase, filmmakers have named some big names they would like to see attached to the film, including academy award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman to star. They admit that casting is still far off but this is certainly a big, talented name sought.

Additionally, they mentioned the possibility of John C. Reilly to star. Johnston fans are also expressing interest including Johnny Depp who we might see play the role of the older brother.

With such big names being dropped its hard to imagine this one won’t make it to the big screen. If they manage to get Hoffman to star, expect huge things on this project.

Have you seen The Devil and Daniel Johnston? Would Hoffman make this role?
