Christopher Nolan just can’t seem to keep his hands off his Inception ensemble. On the heels of recent addition Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anne Hathaway and the long-attached Tom Hardy, it appears that The Dark Knight Rises co-writer/director may be looking to add Marion Cotillard to the roster of his third and final outing with the Caped Crusader. [THR].

While some are still speculating that Nolan’s intentions for her are Talia Al Ghul (daughter of Liam Neeson‘s Ra’s Al Ghul from Batman Begins), it seems unlikely to me with Catwoman (Hathaway) already serving as a femme fatale for Christian Bale‘s Batman. The film’s two female leads are something that people have been buzzing about for some time now, but the likelihood of them both being romantic interests and villains simultaneously seems like overkill. Consider Hardy’s role as Bane and Gordon-Levitt’s speculated role as Dr. Hugo Strange. With that many baddies on Batman’s plate, one can only hope Nolan hasn’t developed a case of the Spider-Man third act jitters.

Villain or not, Cotillard’s presence in anything always brings a smile to my face. I’m just crossing my fingers that Nolan gives her more to do than he did in Inception, and am just slightly curious as to why he didn’t approach her for the Catwoman role (though her having a bun in the oven might be the culprit).

In a bit of related news, congrats to The Dark Knight Rises cinematographer Wally Pfister on his recent Cinematographers Award for his excellent work on Inception [Deadline].

What do you think Nolan should do with Cotillard? Thoughts on another possible villain in the fray?
