Update: According to Deadline, Hendricks’ role has been upgraded to lead, playing Patty Day, the murdered mother of Theron’s Libby Davis character.
The film adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s best-selling thriller Dark Places is becoming more and more appealing with each casting update – first, Amy Adams signed onto the project, then, in the following year, along came Chloe Moretz and Charlize Theron. Now another top actress has boarded the film, and there are already details on her role.
Directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner, Dark Places follows Libby Day (Theron), a woman who, as a young girl, witnessed the murders of her mother and sister at the hands of her teenage brother, Ben. Twenty-five years later, she seizes the opportunity to profit off her tragic history, only to become the target of a killer. Deadline reports that Christina Hendricks will play the older version of Krissi Cates, a stripper who had “accused Ben decades before of being a child molester and some other very serious misdeeds.” She also harbors a secret from her past that could impact Libby and Ben. Along with Hendricks, the publication also revealed additional players Corey Stoll (House Of Cards), who will portray Ben, and Andrea Roth (Rescue Me).
The Mad Men actress currently has her hands full with other projects, including Ryan Gosling’s fantasy feature How To Catch a Monster and Terry Loane’s drama Measure of a Man. Considering that she plays a mother in both of those films, her Dark Places role should be quite a transition.
