The time to meet the Muppets and light the lights is drawing nearer! Previously, we’ve reported Jason Segel is set to script and star in the next Muppet movie, which will feature much of the colorful Muppet cast we all know and love!

As production on this hotly anticipated project draws nearer, casting choices are being revealed. Heat Vision reports Chris Cooper, Rashida Jones, and Amy Adams are in negotiations to join the Disney produced Muppet adventure, which is currently waffling on a title.

The film will center on Segel’s character and his girlfriend (Adams) as they aim to reunite the Muppets to put on a big fundraising show to save a floundering film studio. Jones would play an ABC exec, while Cooper would take on the role of a loathsome business man who wants to undermine their effort so he can buy the studio cheap and mine for oil – which sits beneath the studio. Also, he doesn’t like Muppets, so he must be evil!

Personally, I’m always game for a Muppet movie, and I’m pumped to see such high caliber talent coming to the table for Kermit and the gang’s latest amalgamation. Adams has played a cartoon personified in Enchanted so she’ll be a great fit amidst masses of Muppets. Jones has repeatedly proved her worth as a straight (wo)man in Parks and Recreation and The Office, and pairing an acclaimed serious actor like Cooper with flailing Muppets seems a smart move as it has worked brilliantly before with Michael Caine in The Muppet Christmas Carol. The film’s IMDB page also has Charles Grodin slated – though the character slot is empty so no word on if he’ll be reprising his role from The Great Muppet Caper, but with Segel’s smart sensibilities, I’m going to guess it’ll at least be referenced.

The possibly titled Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made will go into production this fall with a projected release date of Christmas 2011. If Segel follows in Muppet tradition, expect to hear more cast updates as cameo appearance news begins to surface.

Who else would you like to see appear in the latest Muppet movie?
