Is this movie actually going to get made? Call me crazy, but it just seemed like a long shot. About a week ago, we reported that Robert De Niro was, in fact, STILL interested in reprising his role as bounty hunter in Martin Brest’s 1988 action-comedy Midnight Run, but pretty certain his co-star, Charles Grodin, and director, Brest, would not return for the sequel.

It would appear that is not the case. When asked about the sequel, Grodin, who hasn’t acted in television or film for over 15 years, said this:

“I’ve been led to believe by someone I won’t name that they will ask me and I will consider it.”

Grodin stopped acting after his son (Nick) entered elementary school, determined not to be a parent who never saw his children. He’s since become a public servant, volunteering his time helping first-time convicts facing unreasonable mandatory sentences get another shot at freedom.

“This guy was home asleep in bed, but gets life with no chance of parole because the prosecutors says, ‘no car, no murder.’ That’s the main one I’m dealing with now, trying to get this felony murder law ruled unconstitutional,” Grodin said [Deadline Hollywood]

Frankly, maybe he should just keep on helping those people and forget about an acting comeback. God knows we don’t NEED another Midnight Run 2 as much as we need good-hearted Samaritans (like Grodin apparently) confronting the hypocrisies of trial law head on.

That said, it’d be cool to see both him, and Martin “Gigli/Meet Joe Black” Brest return to their former career statures.

Have you seen Midnight Run? What do you think of a sequel? Grodin as an actor?
