UPDATE: According to Coming Soon Disney CEO Bob Iger was misquoted. Cars 2 is still set to arrive in theaters on June 24th, 2011.

President and CEO Bob Iger has announced during Walt Disney Company’s first quarter earnings call that Disney Pixar’s Cars 2 will be released in theaters in December of 2011. The film was previously scheduled for a release on June 24, 2011.

Although no reason was given for its delay it can only be assumed that Disney Pixar will be replacing Cars 2’s hot summer spot for a film that will earn more at the Box Office. The competition at that time will be Warner Brothers’ Green Lantern on June 17 and Michael Bay’s Transformers 3 on July 1, 2011.

ComingSoon has also questioned the possible moving of the release date for Disney Pixar’s The Bear and the Bow which was slated for a December, 2011 release. Perhaps this film will be moved forward into the June 24th spot?

In all the Cars 2 premise doesn’t sound too bad for a sequel, with racing superstar Lightning McQueen zooming back into action, with his best friend Mater in tow, to take on the globe’s fastest and finest. Mater and McQueen will need their passports as they find themselves in a new world of intrigue, thrills and fast-paced comedic escapades around the globe.

Nevertheless, Disney Pixar could certainly do better, as they have realized through the moving of the Cars 2 release date.

What upcoming Disney Pixar film do you think should fill the June spot?
