The comedy troupe known as Broken Lizard, still trying to reprise their smash hit Super Troopers, have had two projects picked up by Universal and MPCA, THR is reporting. The troupe, consisting of 5 students of comedy (Jay Chandresakhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, Erik Stolhanske) has hit a string of bad luck, failing to get significant financial backing after the ill-received Beerfest. But now they have “low-budget” support and are ready to make two movies.
One of the projects is currently untitled, while the other is called Rogue Scholars and is “a college comedy revolving around 5 unruly professors.”
One of the producers, Brad Kevroy, praised Broken Lizard‘s background:
If you look at their body of work and see that they understand modern comedy, they are ready for that breakout. We want to expand them out of their core audience into a four-quadrant audience. They are worth the commitment to get these films made.
Both projects are currently being written. Kevroy will produce along with Mike Callaghan, Ruben Liber, and Richard Perello.
Maybe it is because I’m knee deep in academia that I’m drawn to this, but it is probably because I love Broken Lizard so much. I’ve had mostly positive remarks about them, and I am one of the few people who enjoyed Beerfest. And of course Super Troopers is a staple in college dorms across the nation. I look forward to Rogue Scholars and I predict that this one will be a huge hit. These guys are due.
What did you think of Beerfest? Can these boys reprise Super Troopers?
