This spring we reported that Doug Liman was gearing up for his next feature, a blockbuster titled Luna. We weren’t sure if it would indeed get greenlit, but Variety reports that Paramount has put the “finishing touches” on the deal, working with Skydance Pictures and New Regency to co-finance.
With the last update we learned a previously attacked Jake Gyllenhaal was off the project and Liman had met with Andrew Garfield, Emile Hirsch and Chris Pine for the lead. There is also a female role, in which Liman was considering Rosario Dawson, Megan Fox, Rachel McAdams, Eva Mendes, Zoe Saldana and Olivia Wilde.
Now, we have two more big names to add to the list. Bradley Cooper, coming off The Hangover Part II, and Chris Evans, our Captain America: The First Avenger, have been meeting with Liman. No one has signed on yet, but as financing is in place and the project is fast-tracked, expect news very soon. Scripted by Liman and John Hamburg (with a recent rewrite from producer Simon Kinberg), check out the synopsis below.
The story centers on a renegade group of former space employees, led by an Eastern European woman, who travel the world, stealing space equipment in an attempt to go back to the moon to acquire an energy source. The last item to steal — or in this case, kidnap — is an ex-NASA employee.
While his admirable Fair Game didn’t go anywhere on the awards circuit, I’m glad to see Liman get back into what he does best: crowd-pleasing actioners. Despite which of the many actors actually land the role, I think we can all be happy that Liman isn’t considering the rumored Jumper 2 as his next project.
Who do you think should nab the Luna leads?
