Brad Anderson is best known for his 2004 psychological thriller, The Machinist, but he has spent much of his time in television since then, directing episodes of The Wire and Treme as well as seven episodes of Fringe. With Vanishing on 7th Street, he returns to big-screen horror for the first time since his 2001 film, Session 9.

Vanishing on 7th Street features Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton, and John Leguizamo as members of a small group of people who wake up one morning to find everyone else dead. They eventually band together in a gloomy bar on 7th Street where, if the trailer below is any indication, they discover their only chance of survival is to stay in the light.

Sound familiar? Vanishing on 7th Street may seem like a blatant mishmash of I Am Legend and most Stephen King novels, but in the hands of a director like Anderson, I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss it. An official selection in this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, this movie could  prove to have something new to offer.

At the very least, Vanishing on 7th Street could be the film we all hoped The Happening would be.

UPDATE: A featurette on the film was recently released as well. Check it out below.

Plot: Five strangers meet in a bar after waking up to find themselves alone in the big city. They are warned that their only chance of survival is to stay in the light.

Vanishing on 7th Street does not have a U.S. distributor or release date yet. It will premiere at TIFF in September.

What could this movie do to make up for The Happening?
