In a recent interview with Variety, Bob Weinstein ended up giving a whole new batch of details on Dimension’s upcoming remakes and sequels. First, he confirmed that the new Scream sequel will be part of a new planned trilogy. He also mentioned that Wes Craven may return to the director’s chair and that Neve Campbell has officially signed on. In other sequel news, Weinstein also confirmed that Robert Rodriguez is penning a new script for Spy Kids 4 which will also be shot in 3D, like the horrendous third film. The studio is also planning to do a few remakes in the third dimension with Short Circuit, Scanners, and the horror favorite Hellraiser. The real heart crushing news is that the An American Werewolf in London remake is still moving forward and will also be shot in 3D.
It’s no surprise that they’re heading towards this gimmicky direction of 3D, utilizing it not for artistic reasons but monetary. The news of Wes Craven possibly returning to the Scream series is the only good news to be found in this interview. The first film is definitely one of his best films and even the second one is somewhat entertaining. Hopefully, if he directs, it will be as fun and original as the first film and not as bland as the third. The Scanners and An American Werewolf in London 3D news is beyond worrisome. It was only a matter of time until these remakes would happen, but the fact that they’re going to be in 3D just shows that this nothing more than a quick cash grab.
Is this is a good direction for Dimension and 3D in general?
