With a cast including Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, and District 9 star Sharlto Copley, its difficult to think how Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium could get any better. Well, it just did. Deadline is reporting that Blade Runner, Tron, and Aliens designer Syd Mead has signed on to design sets for the film. The man doesn’t do much work as of late, but he loved District 9 so much, that he agreed.

We have no idea of any of the roles yet, only that it is not related to District 9 at all, but like it, the film will be “filled with many sociopolitical ideas wrapped up inside a Hollywood action film.” Their studio meetings have begun today at every place in Hollywood other than Disney, who don’t make R-rated “event films.” Other details that were previously known include it is an “unabashedly big movie, set 100 years in the future, with all of the obligatory gadgets and technological advances.”

We also have a tentative production schedule as “the film will prep in April, and start production in July in Vancouver before moving to Mexico City in the fall.” Release is planned for 2012 holiday time.

Are you a fan of Mead? What do you want to see in Blomkamp’s next project?
