It was inevitable. Neck-and-neck with Darren Aronofsky‘s Black Swan for my favorite film this year is The Secret In Their Eyes. Juan Jose Campanella took home the Foreign Oscar for this stunning Argentina crime/drama/romance earlier this year. As I was watching it in theaters, I knew the story is so universal that an American remake was bound to happen. My premonition has come true.
Deadline is reporting that Breach and Shattered Glass writer/director is doing both duties on a remake of El Secreto De Sus Ojos. Ray, who has also written State of Play and Flightplan, “just rewrote The Hunger Games for Lionsgate, which Gary Ross is negotiating to direct.”
The original follows a “retired prosecutor who writes a novel he hopes will allow him to deal with an unrequited love for a superior but mostly to gain closure on a particularly brutal unsolved crime that has haunted him through his career.” Campanella will serve as a producer for the Warner Bros. production, 24 Frames reports.
Like Matt Reeves‘ Let Me In turned out, this is a useless remake but has a great director attached so the blow is less harmful. I adored Ray’s Breach, which seemed to get completely lost in the shuffle. For those interested (which should be every single person reading this), The Secret In Their Eyes just hit Blu-ray. Watch it. now.
What do you think about this remake?
