As with any popular news item, Hollywood is intent on turning the event — or in this case, a person’s life — into a feature film. This summer we got the news that DreamWorks had brought on Bill Condon, who is soon wiping his hands clean of The Twilight Saga, and Jeremy Renner to team on a biopic on the controversial WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
We’ve now got an update from Deadline, which indicate the former is still on board and the latter has dropped. They report that Benedict Cumberbatch, who will next be seen in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Star Trek Into Darkness is lining up to play our founder instead, while Robocop star Joel Kinnaman is looking at the role of Daniel Domscheit-Berg, his former cohort.
While those attachments aren’t confirmed by the studio, the film, scripted by Josh Singer, will focus on David Leigh and Luke Harding‘s WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War On Secrecy, as well as Domscheit-Berg‘s own Inside WikiLeaks: My Time With Julian Assange At The World’s Most Dangerous Website. In terms of upcoming Hollywood stars, this would be a heck of a pairing, so hopefully they get firmed up soon, even if Assange’s story is far from finished.
What do you make of this team up?
