English actor Benedict Cumberbatch, after a long list of credits abroad, has finally begun to gain notice Stateside thanks to the tantalizing BBC series Sherlock, where he plays the famous detective in a modern setting with a sociopathic flare. There Cumberbatch displays an offbeat appeal that has inspired a fast-growing fanbase, who eagerly awaits his upcoming turns in such buzzed about big budget affairs as Tomas Alfredson’s thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-sure drama War Horse, and Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: There and Back Again. But today, we have a look at less grandiose venture, the tender British drama Wreckers.

The debut feature of director D.R. Hood, Cumberbatch stars opposite Claire Foy (Season of the Witch) playing a married man whose drawn into a cruel conflict when his brother (Shaun Evans) returns home. Wreckers, which drew some praise at BFI London Film Festival, will open in the United Kingdom (in theaters and On Demand) on December 16, 2011. No release date has yet been set for the United States, but it’s possible Cumberbatch’s growing fame here could translate into a Stateside opening. Synopsis
Dawn (Claire Foy) and David (Benedict Cumberbatch) have moved back to the village where he grew up to start a family. Their relationship seems idyllic, but getting pregnant is proving difficult and adding to the strain of building their perfect home. Out of the blue, David’s younger brother Nick (Shaun Evans) appears. A soldier on leave, Nick sleepwalks and is prone to dark moods, yet Dawn is affected by her brother-in-law’s vulnerability, and they start to spend an increasing amount of time together. Gradually, buried incidents from the brothers’ shared history start to reveal themselves, forcing Dawn to confront the question of whether she really knows her husband at all.
