After Screen Gems picked up SXSW favorite Attack The Block it was up in the air when we would see it. Joe Cornish‘s monster horror/comedy/drama/thriller was released last month in the UK, but we weren’t sure whether its US distributor would pick a Halloween slot or an enticing summer date. It’s now been confirmed via Box Office Mojo that it will land on July 29th, 2011. Expect a big Comic-Con showing the week before since this entertainer is about the most geek-friendly film of the summer, next to Cowboys & Aliens, opening the same day. It will also square off in a packed weekend against Crazy, Stupid, Love. and The Smurfs.

I had the pleasure of seeing the Edgar Wright-produced film starring Nick Frost, Jodie Whittaker, John Boyega, Simon Howard, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones, and Alex Esmail at a NYC screening a few weeks ago. Like Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, it is a superbly entertaining time at the theater. There isn’t much to dwell on afterwards, but like any worthy popcorn blockbuster, it provides thrills and laughs from frame one to the credits. Check out the trailer below if you haven’t yet.

Note: If you missed the free screenings in 25 cities last month, Screen Gems is hosting more and you can RSVP here.

Will you see Attack the Block in theaters? Did Screen Gems pick a good date?
