The benefits of no more Amazing Spider-Man films (don’t worry: another Spidey entry is coming like clockwork next summer, regardless) continues to be on display. Freeing up his schedule after hanging up the suit, Andrew Garfield was able to take part in two major films this fall: Mel Gibson‘s Hacksaw Ridge and Martin Scorsese‘s Silence. The former arrives next week (our Venice review), the latter won’t be seen until the end of this year — but, today, we have new images and some words from the film’s star as we await a first trailer.

“It’s meditative and brutal simultaneously,” Garfield tells Fandango. “It’s a very mysterious film and I can’t quite put it into words. Every time me and Marty would try to get to the bottom of its themes and what the character is going through, we would wind up talking for two to three hours, and every time there would be five minutes of silence at the end because we had exhausted the conversation and had no answers, only more questions. Then he’d look at me and go, ‘Okay kid, until next time…'”

Featuring the first look at Tadanobu Asano and Yōsuke Kubozuka, check out the new images below via Yahoo! Japan, along with Garfield’s recent appearance on Kris Tapley’s Playback podcast, where he briefly discussed making the film.
