Happy Oscar Day! Tim Burton‘s Alice In Wonderland dominated the opening weekend box office, bringing in $116.3 million. This is the all-time highest opening weekend for a March release and for a spring release. Additionally, it is the highest opening weekend tally for a non-sequel movie and for a 3D movie.
While Burton was putting his name in the record books, Brooklyn’s Finest debuted as the runner-up, in a little over half the number of theaters with $13.5 million. Shutter Island was third with $13.3 million.
Avatar fell 44%, drawing just under $8 million in its 12th weekend to finish fifth on the eve of its Oscar showdown with The Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds. It has grossed over $720 million domestically now.
