Mute

After entering the world of large-scale fantasy with last year’s Warcraft, director Duncan Jones is returning to sci-fi for his next film, but this time with a smaller scope. His long-gestating futuristic project Mute finally went into production last year, and ahead of a release on Netflix in 2017, the first images and new synopsis have arrived.

Starring Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Rudd, and Justin Theroux, it follows a mute bartender who has to track down his girlfriend in a near-future Berlin. Judging from this first look, we can see the Blade Runner-inspired set design and a mustachioed Rudd, which is often the best kind of Rudd. Check out the official synopsis and new images (above and below) for the film featuring a score from Clint Mansell.

Set in the near-future, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) is a bartender living in the pulsing city of Berlin. Because of a childhood accident, Leo lost the ability to speak and the only good thing in his life is his beautiful girlfriend Naadirah (Seyneb Saleh). When she vanishes without a trace, Leo’s search for her takes him deep into the city’s seedy underbelly. A pair of wise-cracking American surgeons (Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux) are the only recurring clue and Leo is forced to take on this teeming underworld in order to find his love.
