Another YA series may see a big screen adaptation, thanks to Alcon Entertainment. According to Variety, the company is in the process of acquiring Margaret Stohl’s upcoming Icons: The Book of Sorrow.
The deal would mark the second time they’ve worked with the author; earlier this year, Alcon nabbed the rights to Beautiful Creatures, the first novel in Kami Garcia and Stohl‘s popular supernatural series. Written and directed by Richard LaGravenese, the film — which is currently in production — features a cast that includes Alden Ehrenreich, Emmy Rossum, Emma Thompson, Viola Davis, Jeremy Irons, and Kyle Gallner. It’s set to release on February 25th, 2013.
Once completed, Sorrow will become the debut novel in a planned four- or five-book series. From the looks of it, the plot is a far different animal from Beautiful Creatures, a supernatural drama centered on a local teenager and the mysterious new girl in town who uncover dark secrets about their respective families. Set in the future, Sorrow depicts a world where an alien race has turned buildings into “deadly icons, capable of shutting down all forms of energy and reducing living things to dust in seconds.” Earth’s only salvation lies in four children born immune to the power.
Are you a fan of Stohl’s work? Does her new venture sound like it would make a compelling film?
