The wait for Todd Haynes‘ Carol will be tough; even those in a market where the film immediately opens still have a five-and-a-half-month wait to endure. But those wanting an early taste have some options — it is based on an acclaimed novel, mind — and here’s the best one yet: a BBC radio adaptation of Patricia Highsmith‘s novel.
If you, much like myself, derive a special pleasure from well-mounted productions of this sort, lend your ears. Although the myriad associations that come up — imagining Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Kyle Chandler et al. in these roles, or how Haynes might compose scenes — mean this might initially strike one as a gussied-up preview for Carol, its use of a full voice cast, music (diegetic and non-diegetic alike!), and sound effects makes for fine, compelling listening, connection or no connection.

Carol will enter a limited release on December 18.
