While he’s currently working on bringing Tonka Trucks to the big screen, Adam Sandler has set his sights on other automotive property, one with a smaller following. THR reports that the comedic actor is working with Sony/Columbia and his Happy Madison production team to adapt Bad Toys II for a feature film.
While the title recalls Michael Bay‘s wild action franchise, he’s not associated with this one, rather the original project comes from two French animators Daniel Brunet and Nicolas Douste. They created the hybrid short, which is a multiple-media project consisting of comic books, CG, and live-action, and the duo will come aboard this feature project as producers.
As one could imagine, there’s not a strong narrative to speak of in the actual short, but Sandler will expand the high-octane car chases into a story of a “a grown man reconnecting with his youthful imagination through his son’s toys, and his play turns into an homage to big-budget action films.” It’s a half-way decent concept, but without a large budget, something I’m wary the studio would give Sandler, it’s hard for me to see this working.
With Sandler also developing the short film Pixels into a feature film, I honestly wouldn’t mind him staying on the producing side of things for the rest of his career. Despite excellent turns in Paul Thomas Anderson and Judd Apatow films (yes, he was great even if he was playing a version of himself), Sandler clearly cares little about trying again, evidence in his recent slate of films, the next being Grown Ups II. Check out the short below as we continue to ponder Sandler’s career moves.
Can you see Bad Toys II working as a feature film? From Sandler?
