Although J.J. Abrams has reportedly not even been thinking about his next film, Star Wars: Episode VII, yet, it seems to be the primary focus over at Disney. It’s long been rumored a summer 2015 bow is in the cards, with spin-off films and a continuation of the next trilogy coming along soon after, but now we’ve got a more precise idea when we can expect the additional films, and it’s quite an ambitious plan.
Coming out of CinemaCon, Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm have revealed that Star Wars: Episode VII will indeed arrive in the summer of 2015, just two years after Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness. Following that, a new film is planned for every summer, alternating between a spin-off and a standalone film…until the end of time.
This Saw/Paranormal Activity and (now) Fast & Furious-esque release pattern admittedly has a bit worried off the bat — considering the size of such productions — but Disney certainly has enough manpower for the schedule. As to what these films could contain, we’ve heard rumors of everything from a Zack Snyder Seven Samurai-esque take to Han Solo-led films, so we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, check out Patton Oswalt‘s excellent idea for what Michael Arndt‘s upcoming Episode VII script should include.
Do you think a new Star Wars film every summer is a good idea?
