According to THR, the founder of Wizard Magazine, Gareb Shamus, and Benderspink are teaming up to adapt Black Bull Media’s comic book The New West for the big screen. The two-issue story is set in a futuristic L.A. where “an electromagnetic pulse bomb has caused all technology to stop working.”
Written by Jimmy Palmiotti and drawn by Phil Noto, The New West — aka everyone’s worst nightmare — follows a “disgraced former LAPD detective who must rescue a kidnapped mayor with only a horse and a sword.” This isn’t the first comic book adaptation for Benderspink, they previously brought A History of Violence to the big screen back in 2005. Interestingly enough, Black Bull was the publishing house of Wizard Entertainment, which has grown into a comic and toy price guide, several different magazines as well as conventions, after its start in 1991.
The New West sounds like a fun twist on the western that could ultimately attract a lot of viewers even if they haven’t read the comic. Expect news of a writing team in some time, but you can start compiling your list of who could possibly play the former LAPD detective now.
What do you think of The New West making its way to the big screen?
