Although rumors were swirling for a perfectly timed Halloween release, Lionsgate has officially acquired and decided to unleash Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard‘s much-anticipated horror flick The Cabin in the Woods this spring. The film stars Thor‘s Chris Hemsworth, as well as Jesse Williams, Fran Kranz, Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchison. Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford.  The press release describes the film as “wildly imaginative and intensely horrific, toying with every convention of its genre while at the same time raising their stakes exponentially.” It will hit theaters on the Friday the 13th of April 2012.

The dark comedy Natural Selection has also been picked up for distribution. It was one of our favorites at SXSW (our review here), and Gordon and the Whale reports the Best Narrative Feature and breakthrough performance award winner (for The Hangover‘s Rachael Harris and Brick‘s Matt O’Leary), has been acquired by Cinema Guild for a undetermined fall release. Check out synopsis of Robbie Pickering‘s film below.

When a dutiful Texas housewife (Rachael Harris) discovers that her devout husband has suffered a stroke at a sperm bank where he’s been secretly donating for the past 25 years, she leaves her sheltered world and starts off on a comedic journey to find his eldest biological son (Matt O’Leary from “Brick” and “Frailty”), a mullet-headed, foul-mouthed ex-con. Along the way, Linda’s wonderfully bizarre relationship with Raymond will teach her more about herself than she ever imagined possible.
