In the midst of an awards season run playing a mother trying to save her daughter from drug addiction in Hillbilly Elegy, Glenn Close traversed similar territory in a film that premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival and will finally now arrive.
Four Good Days, directed by previous Close collaborator Rodrigo García (Albert Nobbs), stars the eight-time Oscar nominee as Deb, the mom of Mila Kunis’ Molly who is in the throes of addiction. When a substance abuse treatment requires Molly to be four days clean, Deb must do everything in her power to keep Molly drug-free while working on their broken relationship. Based on a Washington Post article by Eli Saslow, who co-wrote the film with Garcia, the first trailer has landed ahead of a spring release.
Jake Kring-Schreifels said in our review, “Like 2018’s Beautiful Boy, another bleary saga of addiction, Garcia’s movie is interested in Molly’s physical degradation and her cyclical choices just as much as it wants to expose Deb’s psychological prison and parental regrets. Some of this is moving material, but mostly the script begins checking off boxes and scenes too calibrated to elicit real belief in progress or shock.”
